Dr. Gewertz was educated at Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College in the combined BS-MD five-year program. Following his graduation from medical school in 1972, Dr. Gewertz trained in general and vascular surgery at the University of Michigan, then served on the faculty at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. Before joining Cedars-Sinai, he spent the majority of his career (1981-2006) at the University of Chicago, where he served as the Phemister Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery for 14 years. During his tenure, the Chicago department increased its research funding more than three fold.

Dr. Gewertz has several vital roles at Cedars-Sinai: Surgeon-in-Chief, Chair of the Department of Surgery, Vice-President for Interventional Services, and Vice-Dean of Academic Affairs. He also holds the H & S Nichols Distinguished Chair in Surgery. Since joining the Medical Center in 2006, Dr. Gewertz has grown the Department of Surgery and raised its national profile significantly. The department now exceeds 32,000 procedures per year, making it one of the largest surgical programs in the country. National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to the department has dramatically increased to more than $7 M annually, placing the department among the top 20 in the country.

Dr. Gewertz is the author of more than 250 original articles, book chapters and books. His principal clinical and research interests include cerebrovascular disease and mesenteric ischemic syndromes; the NIH and the American Heart Association have funded his basic research into physiology and ischemia/reperfusion injury. Dr. Gewertz was the principal investigator of a $4.4 million project funded by the Department of Defense on the optimization of human factors in civilian and military operating rooms.

Dr. Gewertz has received numerous prestigious awards for his basic investigations and teaching, and is widely sought on the lecture circuit. He is Editor Emeritus of the Journal of Surgical Research and is consistently included in Best Doctors in America, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.
